Who is your help?

By: Jeffrey Wong

I lift up my eyes to the mountains—
where does my help come from?
My help comes from the Lord,
the Maker of heaven and earth.
He will not let your foot slip—
he who watches over you will not slumber;
indeed, he who watches over Israel
will neither slumber nor sleep.
The Lord watches over you—
the Lord is your shade at your right hand;
the sun will not harm you by day,
nor the moon by night.
The Lord will keep you from all harm—
he will watch over your life;
the Lord will watch over your coming and going
both now and forevermore.

Psalm 121

It’s always amazing to me how I make the same mistakes again and again when I have a problem. The first thing I do is always try to solve it and ask for advice from others. After a while, when I’m still stuck with no solution or have made things worse, I decide to ask God for help. And the Lord helps and the problem is solved in way less time than I imagined.

In Psalm 121, it explicitly states in verse two that our help comes from the Lord. And who could help us better than the one who created the universe? He cares about all our problems, not just our big ones. He watches over us 24/7 as He does not sleep.

It is by God’s grace and mercy that we only have so many problems. The Lord takes care of so many things that we take for granted. He even shields us from some things that may cause us harm. Take some time and reflect about that.

Though the Lord is always watching over us, sometimes, He will not intervene until we invite Him to. Psalm 55:22 says to “Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; He will never let the righteous be shaken.” and 1 Peter 5:7 says “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.”

The Lord cares for you and He will help you when you ask Him to, no matter how big or small the problem may be.

How do we ask? By praying. The Bible tells us to pray about everything that worries us. Philippians 4:6-7 says “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Why do we have peace after praying? We have peace becaues we know that God, the creator of the universe who loves us, will take care of it. He is much more able than you and I.

Oh what peace we often forfeit
Oh what needless pain we bear
All because we do not carry
Everything to God in prayer

What A Friend We Have In Jesus (Hymn)

Whatever is troubling you today or causing you anxiety, take it to the Lord. No matter how big the problem is, God is bigger and He will help you.

One thing to note though is if the problem is caused by you not being right with God. Is there something God is asking you to do but you are refusing? Is there something that you know you shouldn’t do but are doing? In Christian speak, we call this sin. If the problems you are facing are caused by sin (a lot of problems are), repent to God and ask Him to help you overcome your sin. The root cause of the problem must be fixed first so that it won’t happen again.

Surely the arm of the Lord is not too short to save, nor his ear too dull to hear. But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear.
