The Lord said to Moses, “How long will these people treat me with contempt? How long will they refuse to believe in me, in spite of all the signs I have performed among them?
Numbers 14:11
The Israelites have done it now. They full out rebelled against the Lord and the land He promised to their forefathers. They were so close to it that they could send spies to check out the promise land.
The promise land was very good. The land was fertile (Exodus 13:24, 13:27). However, the Israelites became too scared to take the land because they did not believe that God could deliver it to them (Numbers 13:31-33).
Despite all the miracles that God as done for them since Egypt, they chose to not believe God again. They as a whole community wanted to go back to Egypt (Numbers 14:4). They threw away the promise God gave to their forefathers due to their lack of faith.
As a result, they were not allowed to go into the promise land. Instead, their children will go since God still has to fulfill the promise He made to Abraham (Numbers 14:30-34). As a result of their sin, they will wander the desert for 40 years (Numbers 14:34).
God has many wonderful things in store for you. These things become yours when you live for God. You can always choose to rebel against God and not want them. If you are not living for God, then you are living against God (Romans 5:10-11). There’s nothing in between. (John 3:16-18)
Now that the Israelites have been sentenced to wander the desert for forty years, they will now know what it is like to live against God and have God against them (Numbers 14:34).
Be careful then, dear brothers and sisters. Make sure that your own hearts are not evil and unbelieving, turning you away from the living God.
