“Every tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land or of the fruit of the trees, is the Lord’s; it is holy to the Lord. If a man wishes to redeem some of his tithe, he shall add a fifth to it. And every tithe of herds and flocks, every tenth animal of all that pass under the herdsman’s staff, shall be holy to the Lord. One shall not differentiate between good or bad, neither shall he make a substitute for it; and if he does substitute for it, then both it and the substitute shall be holy; it shall not be redeemed.”
Leviticus 27:30-33
In the last few verses of Leviticus, God reminds the Israelites that a tenth of what is theirs is actually the Lord’s. Here the Lord explicitly mentions about the tithe.
There is a lot of debate today about whether Christians should be tithing or giving offering. People say that tithing is an old testament thing and is not related to Christians which are part of the New Testament covenant.
What we must remember first of all is that everything we already belongs to God (Psalm 24:1, 1 Corinthians 10:26). What we have is not even ours. Even our lives are not ours anymore as we gave up our lives to follow Jesus (Romans 6:22).
Second of all, we are called to take care of God’s property (Genesis 2:15). That includes all includes all that He has given you (Luke 16:10-13) and even your body (1 Corinthians 3:16-17).
When God commands us to give Him a tithe of what we own, it’s already his to begin with. As Christians, we must be obedient to what He commands us to do. Even though it might be difficult because we may need that money right now. God’s ways are higher than our ways (Isaiah 55:8-9) and a little bit of money is not going to prevent God’s plan for you. For nothing is impossible with God (Luke 1:37).
Why do we even pray to God about our finances when we can’t give 10% back to God? You pray relying on God for your finances and when He gives it to you, you don’t trust God enough to provide for you again? Do not be two-faced in your faith.
Don’t rob God of what is His.
Will man rob God? Yet you are robbing me. But you say, ‘How have we robbed you?’ In your tithes and contributions.
Malachi 3:8
