Week 5 Day 6: The Scapegoat (Leviticus 16-19)

By: Jeffrey Wong

He is to lay both hands on the head of the live goat and confess over it all the wickedness and rebellion of the Israelites—all their sins—and put them on the goat’s head. He shall send the goat away into the wilderness in the care of someone appointed for the task. 22 The goat will carry on itself all their sins to a remote place; and the man shall release it in the wilderness.

Leviticus 16:21-22

In Leviticus 16, it describes the Day of Atonement. On that day, the high priest makes an offering to take away the sins of himself, his household, and the whole Israelite community.

On this day, the high priest uses two goats. One goat is slaughtered and used for the sin offering. The other is a scapegoat. All the sins of the community are placed on the goat’s head and it is sent away into the desert.

When Jesus died on the cross, God placed all the sins we have done and will do on Jesus. He became our sin offering and atonement. (Galatians 5:21) Jesus has already died for your sins, and God is ready to forgive, but it is up to you to accept his forgiveness. It’s a standing offer till you die, and when that happens, it’ll be too late.

When you accept God’s offer of forgiveness (by believing in Jesus as your Lord and Saviour (Romans 10:9-10)), He will remember your sins no more (Hebrews 8:12) by not holding it against you. Like the scapegoat which gets released into the dessert, God takes your sins away far, far away from you (Psalm 103:12, Micah 7:19).

If you have not believed in Jesus, as your Lord and Saviour, there is no better time than now.

Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behavior. But now he has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation—

Colossians 1:21-22
