And when your children ask you, βWhat does this ceremony mean to you?β then tell them, βIt is the Passover sacrifice to the Lord, who passed over the houses of the Israelites in Egypt and spared our homes when he struck down the Egyptians.ββ Then the people bowed down and worshiped.
Exodus 12:26-27
In Exodus 12, we read about how the Jewish ceremony of the Passover began. It literally was a pass over as the Lord passed over their houses and did not kill anyone inside. The chapter also describes how they are to eat the Passover meal.
God gives them instructions on in verse 26 and 27 to instruct their children on the meaning of the Passover ceremony and why they do it.
Today, in our society, there are also different dates that Christians celebrate such as Christmas and Easter. Though they are not the actual date of Christ’s birth or death, we should still explain to people the reason there is Christmas and Easter in the first place.
Otherwise, other explanations will take the place of truth and lead people astray. That’s why there is a Santa Clause and Easter Bunny. It is our responsibilities as Christians to tell people the truth.
There are some Christians, like myself, that don’t celebrate Christmas or Easter as that is not the actual day of Christ’s birth or resurrection. Unlike the Passover which God commanded the Israelites to observe, Christmas and Easter are not mentioned in the Bible.
For me, everyday is a blessing from God and should be celebrated in view of Christ’s birth, death, and resurrection. As a Christian, it’s ok not to celebrate Christmas or Easter (Romans 14:1-8). I actually like Christmas for all the shopping sales.
Check yourself and be clear why you celebrate and observe certain traditions. Don’t make something Holy that is not Holy.
One man regards a certain day above the others, while someone else considers every day alike. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind. He who observes a special day does so to the Lord; he who eats does so to the Lord, for he gives thanks to God; and he who abstains does so to the Lord and gives thanks to God.
Romans 14:5-6
