Week 3 Day 4: It’s Not Easy (Exodus 5-8)

By: Jeffrey Wong

Moses returned to the Lord and said, “Why, Lord, why have you brought trouble on this people? Is this why you sent me? Ever since I went to Pharaoh to speak in your name, he has brought trouble on this people, and you have not rescued your people at all.”

Exodus 5:22023

So Moses goes back and tells Pharaoh to let the Israelites go. Pharaoh says no and orders the Israelites to do more work. As a result, the Israelites are more miserable now due to Moses’ action.

So Moses goes and complains to God. He reminds God how it was God who told him to go speak with Pharaoh. He reminds God that he should have sent someone else. Why isn’t Pharaoh letting the Israelites go?

Do you feel like that sometimes? You know God told you to do something and you do it. But then because you did it, life becomes hard. So you start to doubt, whether it was really God telling you to do something. Doesn’t the Bible say things like, ‘I can do all this through him who gives me strength.” (Philippians 4:13)

Just because God sends you somewhere or tells you to do something doesn’t mean it’s going to be smooth sailing. The enemy isn’t going to just let their strongholds go. Victory is the Lord’s, but we must persevere. It’s a war, not a battle. In Exodus 6-8, we read how God starts going on the offensive with the start of the plagues.

The Bible encourages us to persevere as being a Christian is not easy. We will be persecuted and attacked (Matthew 10:22). But we must fully rely on Jesus who will strengthen us to persevere (Hebrews 12:1-2).

Remember, that in our walk with Christ, our enemies are not of flesh and blood, but against the evil spiritual powers of this world (Ephesians 6:12)

We are pressed on every side by troubles, but we are not crushed. We are perplexed, but not driven to despair. We are hunted down, but never abandoned by God. We get knocked down, but we are not destroyed. Through suffering, our bodies continue to share in the death of Jesus so that the life of Jesus may also be seen in our bodies.
