Week 2 Day 1: Being A Living Testimony (Genesis 24-26)

By: Jeffrey Wong

“I came today to the spring and said, ‘O Lord, the God of my master Abraham, if now you are prospering the way that I go, behold, I am standing by the spring of water. Let the virgin who comes out to draw water, to whom I shall say, “Please give me a little water from your jar to drink,” and who will say to me, “Drink, and I will draw for your camels also,” let her be the woman whom the Lord has appointed for my master’s son.’

“Before I had finished speaking in my heart, behold, Rebekah came out with her water jar on her shoulder, and she went down to the spring and drew water. I said to her, ‘Please let me drink.’ She quickly let down her jar from her shoulder and said, ‘Drink, and I will give your camels drink also.’ So I drank, and she gave the camels drink also.

Genesis 24:42-46

In Genesis 24, Abraham sends his servant to his hometown to find a wife for Isaac. He tells the servant that God will grant him success (Genesis 24:7). The servant heads off.

When he gets to Abraham’s hometown, he prays to God for a sign so he will know which woman will be Isaac’s wife.

Notice how when he prays, he says, the following, “O Lord, the God of my master Abraham”, he doesn’t refer to the Lord as his God. That means he doesn’t believe in God. Otherwise, he would have said, “O Lord, my God” like how Moses (Deuteronomy 4:5), Joshua (Joshua14:9), and many others.

But it is because of Abraham, he knows that God is real. This is Abraham’s oldest and most trusted servant (Genesis 24:2). He has been with Abraham in his whole journey in Canaan. He has witnessed what God has done with Abraham.

It is because of Abraham’s faith that this man even decides to pray. Even before he finished praying, God answered him (Genesis 24:15). When Rebekah’s family approves of her marriage, the servant bows down and worships the Lord (Genesis 24:52)

I don’t know if the man ends up being a believer in the Lord like Abraham, but he does believe in God more at the end of the story than at the beginning of the story.

As Christians, our lives and our testimonies should draw people to Jesus. Even though you might not be the one that makes them believe in God, your life is an important step in them believing and following the Lord. So, no matter what you are doing, keep in mind that you are always living for the Lord and your purpose is to draw people to the Lord just like Abraham did with his servant.

And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
