Week 1 Day 3: Do What You Know Is Right (Genesis 9-11)

Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be dispersed over the face of the whole earth.”

Genesis 11:4

Though God destroys every single living thing through a flood, sin remains as Noah and his family still have it. So in the brand new world, sin starts wreaking havoc once again.

In Genesis 11, we get to a story about a group of people who decide to build a city for themselves. In the city, there would be a tall tower and people from all over the world will come to the city.

This goes against what God told mankind to do in Genesis 1:28, which was to “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it.” It’s really important as God tells the same thing to Noah and his family in Genesis 9:7.

These people however, decided that they didn’t want to go throughout the earth and instead, just stay in one location. This did not please God. So God comes down and thwarts their plan by making them all speak different languages. So the people were unable to finish building the city and went their separate ways.

If you know what God wants you to do, then do it. If you know what God wants you not to do, then don’t do it. You always have a choice. It will be wise to make the right one and not have divine intervention force you to make the right choice. Divine intervention, like in the tower of Babel, is not the kind of divine intervention you want.

For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened.
