Putting God In A Box

By: Jeffrey Wong

One day Jesus said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side of the lake.” So they got into a boat and set out. As they sailed, he fell asleep. A squall came down on the lake, so that the boat was being swamped, and they were in great danger.

The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Master, Master, we’re going to drown!”

He got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waters; the storm subsided, and all was calm. “Where is your faith?” he asked his disciples.

In fear and amazement they asked one another, “Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him.”

Luke 8:22-25

Disciples and Jesus get on a boat to go to the other side of the lake. Jesus decides to take a nap. A storm comes and threatens to capsize their boat. Disciples get scared and tells Jesus they’re going to die. Jesus wakes up, tells the storm to stop, and says to the disciples, “Where is your faith?”

What does this have to do with faith? Why would Jesus even ask such a question? Wouldn’t a more appropriate question be, “Are you alright?”

In order to understand why Jesus rebukes the disciples with that question, we’ll have take a look back at what the disciples have been through with Jesus.

Up until this point, the disciples have seen the following miracles Jesus has done as Luke records:

  • The miraculous catch of fish (Luke 5:1-11)
  • Jesus heals a man with leprosy (Luke 5:12-16)
  • Jesus heals a paralytic (Luke 5:17-26)
  • Jesus heals a crippled man (Luke 6:6-11)
  • Jesus heals a sick servant (Luke 7:1-10)
  • Jesus raises a dead man (Luke 7:11-17)

In the storm, the disciples thought Jesus was powerless to help them. In the storm, they were in fact informing Jesus that everyone on the boat was going to die. In the storm, they had lost hope.

The disciples put Jesus in a box and did not believe that Jesus could save them from the storm because He’s never done that before. Just because Jesus hasn’t done something doesn’t mean he can’t. That’s why Jesus rebuked them and that’s why the disciples were astonished that the storm went away.

We can trust Jesus in all areas of our lives and that He will take care of us in every situation. If you are in a situation you have never faced before, trust the Lord to take care of you. Don’t limit your faith to what you’ve only seen God do as that will be a lack of faith.

Surely the arm of the LORD is not too short to save, nor his ear too dull to hear.

Isaiah 59:1
