Just Do It

The next day there was a wedding celebration in the village of Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, and Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the celebration. The wine supply ran out during the festivities, so Jesus’ mother told him, “They have no more wine.”

“Dear woman, that’s not our problem,” Jesus replied. “My time has not yet come.”

But his mother told the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”

Standing nearby were six stone water jars, used for Jewish ceremonial washing. Each could hold twenty to thirty gallons. Jesus told the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” When the jars had been filled, he said, “Now dip some out, and take it to the master of ceremonies.” So the servants followed his instructions.

When the master of ceremonies tasted the water that was now wine, not knowing where it had come from (though, of course, the servants knew), he called the bridegroom over. “A host always serves the best wine first,” he said. “Then, when everyone has had a lot to drink, he brings out the less expensive wine. But you have kept the best until now!”

This miraculous sign at Cana in Galilee was the first time Jesus revealed his glory. And his disciples believed in him.

After the wedding he went to Capernaum for a few days with his mother, his brothers, and his disciples.

John 2:1-12 (NLT)

Imagine your one of the servants working at the dinner party. You’ve run out of wine and this lady tells you to do whatever her son says.

He tells you to fill up these ceremonial washing jars with water. Sure, no problem. Done.

Then he tells you to draw some of that water and present it to the master of ceremony (ie. your boss).

At that point, you’re probably like, “What??? Why???? It’s water. Do you want me fired?”

I’m not sure if the servants in the story hesitated or had doubts about bringing the water to the master of ceremony. But they did and when they did, they experienced a miracle. The water they brought to the master of ceremony had turned into wine on the way there.

A similar experience happened to Peter in Luke 5:1-11. Jesus told Peter to cast his nets one more time and Peter, despite having caught nothing all night, obeyed. Peter experienced a miraculous catch of fish.

When God tells you to do something and it doesn’t seem to make any sense, just do it. God’s ways are higher than your ways (Isaiah 55:8-9) and He knows what’s he doing. Just trust in Him and do it. You won’t know what God has in store for you till you do.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.
